Structal Lands a $35M Contract for the Construction of the Pittsburgh Penguins' New Arena |
|
(BOUCHERVILLE, QC) – Structal-Heavy Steel Construction (“Structal”), a business unit of Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM) located in Point of Rocks, MD, has obtained a contract for the construction and erection of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ new arena from the Sports and Exhibition Authority (“SEA”) and Allegheny County. The new arena, to be built in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will be owned by the SEA and managed by the Penguins. The cost of building the arena is estimated at more than US$290 million, and the contract awarded to Structal is worth close to CAN$35 million.
“This contract, which brings to 48 the number of North American stadiums, arenas and other sports facilities Structal has been associated with over the years, highlights our expertise in the construction of complex projects,” said Luc Pelland, President of Structal-Heavy Steel Construction. According to Charlie Watson, President of Structal’s U.S. division, the fact that SEA and the Penguins are confident that the new arena will qualify for LEED® certification from the U.S. Green Building Council illustrates that steel is arguably a material of choice for the construction of such projects.
Technyx, another business unit of Canam Group Inc., will produce the shop drawings for this project. Fabrication of the structural steel components, mainly in Canam Group’s St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC, and Point of Rocks, MD, plants, will begin in the fall of 2008. The erection work is scheduled to begin in December 2008 and to be completed during the third quarter of 2009.
The centerpiece for this new state-of-the-art arena, which will replace Mellon Arena, will be a glass atrium overlooking Fifth and Centre Avenues. The future home of the Pittsburgh Penguins will accommodate 18,500 spectators and is expected to open in time for the 2010-2011 NHL season.
Structal-Heavy Steel Construction is specialized in major and complex construction projects and also offers engineering support, design-build and project management services.
In recent years, Structal and Canam Group Inc. have been associated with many other complex and prestigious construction projects in North America, including the Newseum in Washington, DC, the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and the new stadiums built for the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, the New York Giants and New York Jets, the New York Red Bulls, the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Canam Group Inc. is an industrial company operating 12 plants specialized in the design and fabrication of construction products and solutions. The company employs more than 3,000 people in Canada, the United States, Romania and India, and has partnerships with companies in Mexico, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and China.
