2009 CISC-Quebec Steel Design Awards honour three business units of Canam Group

It was in November at the second annual Quebec Steel Symposium that the CISC-Quebec (Canadian Institute of Steel Construction) announced the recipients of its 12th Annual Quebec Steel Design Awards. The Canam Canada, Structal-Bridges and Structal-Heavy Steel Construction business units were among the honorees.

Canam Canada is recognized in two categories
“Green Buildings”
Canam Canada was honoured for its participation in the project commissioned by the Société de transport de Montréal to expand the Legendre bus garage and build a new body shop. This project, built using high-end, low-emission, Quebec-produced, recycled-content materials, won in the “Green Buildings” category for its potential to reduce phenomena known as thermal islands and for the integration of a sustainable, efficient and aesthetically pleasing steel structure.

Commercial/Institutional Projects”
Canam Canada was also honoured for its participation in the construction of the Lebourgneuf Complex in Quebec City. This project, which features steel, brick, glass and stone, won Honourable Mention for its bold use of a system of four load-bearing steel partitions harmoniously integrated into the building’s unique architectural design.

Structal-Bridges is recognized in the “Industrial Projects/Bridges” category
Structal-Bridges was honoured for its participation in the replacement of twin bridges over Island Park Drive. Island Park Bridge, consisting of one eastbound lane bridge and one westbound lane bridge, was built using concrete slabs on steel beams on Highway 417 near Ottawa in 1959. This project won in the “Industrial Projects/Bridges” category for the utilization of rapid-replacement technology, a technique that provides for a temporary enclosed construction staging area and that uses self-propelled modular transporters to lift, remove and replace existing bridges. This innovative method of bridge replacement helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 97%.

Structal-Heavy Steel Construction is recognized in the “Projects Outside Quebec” category
Structal-Heavy Steel Construction was honoured for its participation in the construction of the new Yankee Stadium, located in the Bronx borough of New York City. The new ballpark is meant to be very similar in design to the original stadium, including the steel frieze that replicates the original copper frieze. More than half of the 13,000 tons of structural steel components have been left exposed as part of the building’s architectural design. The project earned Honourable Mention for successfully overcoming the many technical challenges arising from a project of this magnitude that requires complex and geometrically irregular design elements.

People’s Choice
Before the awards presentation, Quebec Steel Symposium attendees were asked to vote for their favourite project. The members of the Structal-Heavy Steel Construction team were delighted to learn that the Yankee Stadium project was selected for the People’s Choice Award.
