Topping-off ceremony
The ceremony held August 28 at Edmonton Clinic North marked the installation of the final beam supplied by Structal-Heavy Steel Construction (Structal). Many showed up to celebrate, including the construction crew, invited to this prestigious event by general contractor and Structal customer PCL Construction Management (PCL).

Also on hand for the topping off ceremony were members of the media, the building owners and various steel industry representatives.

Fast-track schedule
The six-storey, 570,000-square-foot (52,955 m2) project located in Edmonton, Alberta, is described by the Structal team as a success on many levels.

Deliveries for this project started two months later than planned for reasons beyond Structal’s control. Consequently, work on the project was accelerated and the original completion date was moved up by a week. During the ceremony, PCL officials made a point of congratulating Structal for keeping up with the demands of this fast-track schedule.

Challenges met with flying colors
The steel frame was built with 2,750 tons of structural steel or a total of 6,000 structural pieces, fabricated at the Canam plant in Sunnyside, Washington.

The contract to fabricate the structural steel components was a first for the Sunnyside plant, which acquired a new structural steel production line a year ago. This line makes it possible to better serve markets in western Canada and the western United States. Structal’s U.S. counterparts had to become familiar with the metric system to execute their first-ever Canadian project, but met the challenge with flying colors.

This project also required approximately 500,000 square feet (46,450 m2) of steel deck, fabricated at the Canam plant in Calgary, Alberta.

It was with great honor and pride that the steel workers autographed the final beam before it was hoisted to the top of the structure.

The construction crew had a perfect view of the final beam as it was being raised.

The project was executed on a fast-track schedule to the great satisfaction of the customer.
